The experience and training of Dr Michael Kalmar’s includes reconstructive and acute surgery for the wrist and the hand; such as fracture management, trauma, tendon surgery (tendon transfers), free flap and micro vascular surgery, nerve surgery and elective surgeries to manage conditions like disease, Quatrains, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, etc.

Dr. Michael graduated from the University Queensland (UQ) with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) and proceeded to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in UQ. Subsequently, he completed advanced training in Orthopaedic surgery in NSW.
After this training in Orthopaedics, Dr. Michael completed aFellowship in Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.
The doctor has also been trained in international locations. He completed further training as a visiting Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery fellow at the Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India. He also served in Children’s Hospital of Orange County, University of California, Irvine and Shriner’s Hospital Los Angeles.
He has also travelled widely to work with hand surgery professors in Madrid (Spain) and Niigata (Japan). He worked as a consultant hand and wrist specialist at Sydney Hospital- Hand Unit and also in Fairfield Hospital- South Western Sydney Hand Centre, before returning to Queensland.
The doctor has a strong interest in research and teaching. He holds academic titles with Bond University, Griffiths University and University of Queensland medical schools.
He has many peer-reviewed and published research papers in Orthopaedic and Hand surgery, drawn from his experience as a hand and wrist specialist. The doctor also presents at local, national, and international conferences in hand surgery.
He also travels overseas regularly on Orthopaedic outreach trips, with the objective of offering high-quality healthcare to all. He also provides training to surgical trainees and local surgeons. Places he visits regularly include Cambodia, Fiji and Nepal.

The doctor recommends that for hand or wrist surgery, the patient must stop smoking, stop taking some medications (blood thinning/ immune suppressive medication) as well as diabetic medication.
